OUR WATER AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS FACILITATE SELF-RELIANCE AND POVERTY REDUCTION, WHICH IN TURN HELP PREVENT THE THREAT OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING.

CLEAN WATEREDUCATION

THE WATER PROGRAM

WATER IS THE MOST BASIC OF ALL HUMAN NECESSITIES. IT MAKES ALL OTHER PROGRESS POSSIBLE, YET OVER 1 BILLION PEOPLE WORLDWIDE CURRENTLY LACK ACCESS TO SAFE, CLEAN DRINKING WATER.

An estimated 4,000 people die every day as a direct result of contaminated water with children being the hardest hit. Polluted drinking water claims more lives than all forms of violence combined including war, and claims the lives of more children than AIDS, malaria, and measles combined. Each day, women and children walk miles to collect water that is so contaminated it will kill 25% of her family. The countless hours spent collecting water is time not spent in school, often causing girls to fall behind and eventually drop out.

FAMILY HUMANITARIAN SOLVES THIS PROBLEM BY PROVIDING LIFETIME ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER FOR ENTIRE COMMUNITIES IN THE MOST REMOTE VILLAGES IN THE WORLD THROUGH A COMBINATION OF COST EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT BOREHOLES AND IN-HOME WATER FILTERS.

We can drill a life-saving borehole for about 75% less cost than most other NGO’s, allowing us to provide this most basic necessity for literally pennies per person.

The success of our water program, however, lies in realizing that drilling boreholes or providing water filters is only about 30% of the solution. The most critical step in providing water sources that will remain in operation for a lifetime lies in community education.

When a community is evaluated and identified as a possible recipient, the groundwork is established through education before drilling ever begins. The community is taught and demonstrates an understanding of the value of clean water and the health and economic benefits it brings.

Villagers are also taught about sanitation through proper handwashing and how, combined with a clean water source, it can eliminate 95% of illness their family currently experiences. Community health trainers are identified and taught these principles so that they can continue to teach within the community and within the schools.

Responsibility for the borehole is established and provisions for maintenance are required to be in place before drilling begins.

Either a community maintenance committee is set up with established rules for villagers to contribute funds and an elected villager takes responsibility for maintenance, or an existing or future school takes ownership of the borehole, charging a nominal fee for use.

The school assumes responsibility for maintenance and any remaining funds are used toward school programs.

Boreholes drilled on school property benefit the kids with clean water during the school day and allow them to carry water home with them for their families in the afternoon.

Complete maintenance training is provided to the responsible party and follow-up on each borehole is completed at 6, 12, and 24 months to assure that obligations are met for education and maintenance.

With this most basic necessity now met, families are capable of progressing in other areas.

Creating access to clean water saves lives, facilitates education, provides hope, and enables prosperity to take hold – it is very likely the most dramatic impact you can ever have at such a low cost!

THE EDUCATION PROGRAM

EDUCATION IS THE MOST POWERFUL TOOL THAT EXISTS IN LIFTING INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, COMMUNITIES, AND EVEN ENTIRE COUNTRIES OUT OF POVERTY.

When the most basic need of clean water is met, we can then concentrate on education which has been proven to be the single greatest predictor of progress, opportunity, and prosperity. Educating one child ultimately changes the lives of hundreds more. We look for communities that have demonstrated a commitment toward education and have made the appropriate sacrifices to ensure their children receive this great gift. When communities have proven their ability to successfully and sustainably provide instruction but lack an appropriate structure, they become candidates for new school construction which is often a requirement of the government to allow children to continue their education through upper primary school and beyond. Where communities have not yet been successful at providing any type of instruction, we try to help them find sustainable solutions for funding teachers – when they can demonstrate sustainability, they also become candidates for school construction. Where schools exist, but paying school fees poses and extreme hardship, we provide opportunities for school sponsorship. In addition to formal schooling, we support other types of beneficial skills training and knowledge transfer that foster health and nutrition benefits, economic progress, and self-reliance. Women are taught how to improve nutrition in their families through garden box vegetable farming, orphanages and families are mentored through business development, and goats are gifted to families that allow them to both sustainably alleviate malnutrition and to provide necessary school fees.

Clean water is life’s most basic necessity, yet more than 1 billion people still lack access to this simple need.

CONTRIBUTE TO A BORE HOLE

Thousands die every day as a direct result of contaminated water and women and girls walk an average of 4+ miles per day to collect water that is so dirty, she knows it will kill 25% of her family.  The same filthy water they walk miles to access is a breeding ground for insects, is bathing and laundry water for humans, and is filled with human and animal waste.  Time spent fetching water by these women and children is time not spent attending school or in income generating activities.  Not only does clean water save lives, it makes all other necessities possible – food, education, and economic growth.  Without clean water, progress is not possible.  The best part is that there is a simple solution.  For only $1,500, we can drill a borehole that will serve an entire community – that is less than 75 cents per person for lifetime access to clean water!

Where boreholes are either not appropriate or possible, we have partnered with Sawyer international to provide water filters to households that can eliminate 95%+ of all illnesses caused by waterborne diseases.

GIFT A WATER FILTER

With its 0.02 micron absolute filtration, the filter removes 99.99% of viruses, bacteria, and prozoa/cysts, can purify up to 170 gallons of clean water per day, and lasts 10-20 years. The water filters contain a high number of tiny “U” shaped hollow fiber micro-tubes that trap contaminants while allowing decontaminated water to pass freely at a high flow rate – eliminating the need to store water and reducing the possibility of water contamination after the filtration process. The water filter can be cleaned and reused almost indefinitely with no expensive cartridges to replace…ever. This filter, combined with community education on hygiene and sanitation, virtually eliminates illness

Developing countries are full of smart, hard-working youth who are capable of accomplishing great things. Too often, however, their circumstances don’t allow them to get the education necessary to thrive and to break the cycle of poverty.

START SPONSORING A STUDENT

By sponsoring an orphan or impoverished child, you are providing the opportunity they need to change their lives forever. Sponsorship involves a modest monthly contribution that provides school fees, uniforms, school supplies and test fees, feminine hygiene kits where appropriate, and often a much-needed meal during the school day. It also involves a commitment to write to your sponsored child once a month with words of love, wisdom, and encouragement, letting them know that they matter and that they can do amazing things – to a child who has never before heard these words, they can be completely life-changing! You will also periodically receive letters, pictures, etc. back from your child and may even have the opportunity to meet them in person during one of our expeditions. It is our hope that you will truly get to know each other and that you will feel like your newly “adopted” child is a part of your family.

HELP SUPPORT A SCHOOL BUILD

Circumstances, however, frequently dictate that they walk many miles to spend every school day sitting on a dirt floor which greatly increases their chances of contracting jiggers, they spend every school day sitting under a tree fighting the rain and elements in a desperate attempt to get an education, or they simply don’t have access to this luxury. Additionally, some countries require a “government approved” structure to be in place for the upper level primary grades and beyond which means that many children are not allowed to progress beyond the first few years of schooling. We look for communities that have demonstrated a commitment toward education and have made the appropriate sacrifices to ensure their children receive this great gift. HELP SUPPORT A SCHOOL BUILD

We look for opportunities to lift families out of extreme poverty through sustainable income generating activities and supporting micro-loans.

Those living in extreme poverty often have brilliant ideas for generating income, but often lack the business knowledge, polished skillset, or start-up capital to make them a reality. Lending a hand up in these areas often not only positively impacts the business owner, but the entire community as the economy is strengthened and valuable goods and services become available.

Through assistance with sustainable business ideas, we have seen orphanages, schools, and families go from extreme poverty to being completely self-reliant in just a short period of time.

With proper nutrition, mental development stays on track and education becomes more attainable, impacting families and communities for generations. With a proven “learn and earn” approach, families learn gardening, nutrition, and basic business concepts to earn their own garden box and become self-sufficient. As families become more and more successful with box gardening and are able to grow more than they need, they are able to sell the excess and use the income to provide other necessities. Not only does this model improve malnutrition, education, and self-reliance, learning how to grow food for their families empowers them with hope, confidence, and a desire to learn more. Please consider donating one time or as a monthly recurring gift.

Seven out of ten children in rural Guatemala are malnourished, affecting both their physical growth and mental development. Similar malnutrition rates exist across rural Africa. In these areas, square foot gardening in raised garden boxes helps families sustainably improve their nutrition and allows children to thrive.
